Ukrainian civil society organizations have called on EU member states to grant Ukraine candidate status
More than 200 Ukrainian civil society organizations have called on EU member states to grant Ukraine candidate status at the European Council on 23-24 June. Ukrainian Institute for International Politics also signed the Joint Letter.
Ukraine already meets the criteria for the candidate status. More than 90% of Ukrainians support Ukraine's accession to the EU.
Those promoting its postponement are well heard; however, this will harm both Ukraine and the EU itself. We explain why it will slow down the post-war reforms in Ukraine; undermine democracy in other countries, including Western Balkans; increase the EU budget's burden, and push for new instability in Europe.
Any postponement of this decision will slow down the post-war reform in Ukraine. Such a move would undermine democracy in other countries (including Western Balkans). It also threatens to increase the EU budget's burden and push for new instability in Europe.
Therefore, granting Ukraine candidate status is a necessary decision. It will create a powerful tool for reforming Ukraine, will help to avoid the despair of politicians and society, and will strengthen the European Union and its authority in the world.
