Macro-regional strategies for Ukraine's recovery and EU integration
Macro-regional strategies for Ukraine's recovery and EU integration were discussed at the final event of the current Swedish Presidency for the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea region which gathered EUSBSR National Coordinators and Policy Area Coordinators, together with representatives of EU Commission and Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme.
Participants discussed ways of engaging civil society, youth organisations, and private companies in the strategy implementation.
Sustainable cooperation between Ukraine and the Danube and Baltic Sea regions was also important topic during the discussions as cooperation with has been one of the priorities of the Swedish Presidency. Parallel workshops were also held with a view to facilitate a dialogue between EUSBSR and Ukrainian stakeholders on needs and possibilities.
During her speech, Nadija Afanasieva stressed the importance of macro-regional strategies as a tool for European integration and provided an overview of the Ukrainian experiences of being member of the Danube Region Strategy during the war and perspectives for the future:
2018: the 1st level of control for Ukrainian projects under the Danube Transnational Programme was launched, facilitating the receipt of funding for projects
2020: Ukraine joined Austria and Moldova in coordinating EUSDR Priority Area 9 "People and skills"
2022: Ukraine became the first non-EU country to preside over the Danube Region Strategy. After the russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, EUSDR provided valuable support to our country
